Phil Simmons will continue as Bangladesh’s head coach until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) offered him a longer contract after initially appointing him as interim coach until the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Simmons, 61, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to work with Bangladesh long-term. “The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we can achieve great things together,” Simmons said. He praised the squad’s skill and passion, expressing optimism about taking Bangladesh cricket to new heights.
However, Simmons’ stint as interim coach yielded mixed results. Bangladesh won one Test and a T20I series in the West Indies but exited the Champions Trophy early after losses to India and New Zealand. Despite these setbacks, Simmons remains positive about the team’s potential. “The energy and commitment in this group have been impressive. I’m excited to help these players reach their full potential,” he added.
Simmons’ permanent appointment ends speculation about his future with Bangladesh. As a result, he will no longer coach Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), a role he had held since December 2023.
Simmons, one of only four coaches to oversee 400 international matches, brings a wealth of experience. He previously coached Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan and had two stints with West Indies, guiding them to the 2016 T20 World Cup title.
Simmons was appointed as Bangladesh’s interim coach in October after the BCB suspended Chandika Hathurusinghe. His experience and proven track record now position him to lead Bangladesh through an exciting period of growth and development.
