In a surprising turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating the reinstation of Babar Azam as captain for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, starting on June 2. This decision comes after a string of disappointments under the leadership of Shaheen Afridi, who took the reins following Babar Azam’s resignation after Pakistan’s setback at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Shaheen Afridi’s tenure as T20I captain, initially hailed for his success with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, failed to translate to the national team. This was evident in their recent disappointing 4-1 series loss to New Zealand. Reports of scrutiny over Shaheen’s captaincy had already been circulating, prompting the PCB to potentially reconsider their choice.
While Mohammad Rizwan emerged as a strong contender for the captaincy, recent developments have shifted the focus back to Babar Azam. Sources suggest PCB officials are leaning towards finalizing Babar as their preferred candidate to lead the team once again.
Babar Azam’s earlier resignation from white-ball captaincy triggered significant changes in Pakistan’s cricketing leadership, with Shan Masood being appointed as Test captain. However, with the arrival of new PCB leadership, including Mohsin Naqvi as chairman, there appears to be a reevaluation of the team’s direction.
However, Babar’s hesitance to reclaim the role underscores the need for clear communication and a strong working relationship between the captain and the board for Pakistan’s success. With the T20 World Cup approaching, the PCB’s impending decision on the captaincy holds significant weight for Pakistan’s cricketing future.
