Nigar Sultana is determined to lead Bangladesh to victory against Scotland in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup on October 3. She sees this game as crucial for building momentum, as Bangladesh aim to improve on their poor World Cup record, having won only one match across five editions, with no victories in their last four tournaments. Sultana stressed the importance of starting strong, stating, “Beating Scotland would be a huge achievement. It will help the team get into a flow and dream of something bigger.”

While confident, Sultana made it clear that Bangladesh won’t underestimate Scotland. “Scotland are playing good cricket, and they won’t let you win easily. We’re mentally prepared for a tough challenge,” she said. Having played in four World Cups herself, Sultana acknowledged the need to convert good performances into victories. Bangladesh’s last win came in the 2014 edition against Sri Lanka.

Sultana and her team have high ambitions, aiming to challenge stronger teams like England, West Indies, and South Africa in their group. To reach the semi-finals, Bangladesh will need to defeat these teams. Sultana is particularly optimistic about their spin attack, which has helped them beat South Africa in T20Is before.

Although the World Cup was originally scheduled in Bangladesh, it was moved to the UAE due to political unrest. Sultana remains positive, noting their past experience in Abu Dhabi. The team will have two warm-up games in Sharjah to adapt to the conditions.

Despite concerns about Bangladesh’s batting, Sultana is optimistic about emerging talents. Shathi Rani is showing promise for the team. Uncapped Taj Nehar could bolster the middle order and powerplay. Young legspinner Rabeya Khan is crucial for their bowling attack. She is Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is this year.
