Nicholas Pooran showcased his batting prowess against Afghanistan in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, smashing 98 runs off just 53 deliveries. His blistering innings, which included eight sixes and six boundaries, shattered multiple records.

One of his remarkable feats was surpassing Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes by a West Indies batsman in T20Is, reaching a tally of 128 sixes. Pooran’s innings also marked the highest individual score of the tournament so far, eclipsing the previous record of 94 not out by USA’s Aaron Jones.
This innings was also a personal best for Pooran in T20 Internationals, surpassing his previous high score of 82. He achieved another milestone by crossing the 2000-run mark in T20I cricket and became only the sixth player in T20 history to hit over 500 sixes.
Highlighting his explosive batting, Pooran scored 36 runs in a single over against Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai, a rare achievement in T20 World Cup history after Yuvraj Singh’s iconic six sixes off Stuart Broad in 2007.
Entering the crease at number three after Brandon King’s dismissal, Pooran forged crucial partnerships, first with Johnson Charles (80 runs) and then with Rovman Powell (64 runs). His stellar performance propelled West Indies to a formidable total of 218/5, the highest in the tournament so far.
Here’s how Pooran’s record compares with other West Indies batsmen in terms of most sixes in T20Is:
- Nicholas Pooran: 128*
- Chris Gayle: 124
- Evin Lewis: 111
Nicholas Pooran’s monumental innings against Afghanistan reaffirmed his status as a formidable batsman in T20 cricket, setting new benchmarks in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
