Neil Wagner has decided to uphold his retirement from international cricket despite speculation about a potential comeback for New Zealand’s series-deciding second Test against Australia.
Wagner made his retirement announcement on February 27, just ahead of New Zealand’s Wellington Test against Australia. However, with young fast bowler William O’Rourke sustaining a hamstring injury during the match, questions arose about Wagner’s potential return to the playing XI, especially after New Zealand’s defeat.
Following the loss, BlackCaps’ captain Tim Southee hinted at the possibility of Wagner reconsidering his retirement decision if O’Rourke failed to recover in time for the next match. However, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on March 4 that O’Rourke would indeed miss the second Test due to his injury.
In response, NZC announced the inclusion of uncapped speedster Ben Sears into the squad as O’Rourke’s replacement, effectively dimming Wagner’s hopes of a comeback to the national team.
New Zealand faced a significant setback with a 172-run defeat in Wellington, failing to chase down Australia’s target of 369 on Day 4 of the Test match. As a result, they slipped to the second position on the 2023-25 World Test Championship points table.
Now, with the series and crucial World Test Championship points at stake, Tim Southee’s team is preparing to take on their Australian rivals at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch from March 8 to March 12.
