All-rounders Nathan Smith and Josh Clarkson have been awarded New Zealand central contracts, filling the slots left open after Devon Conway and Finn Allen declined their contracts last month.
Player Profiles: Clarkson and Smith

Clarkson, a 27-year-old middle-order batter and medium-pace bowler, has experience in three ODIs and T20Is. Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Smith, yet to make his international debut, was the leading wicket-taker in last season’s Plunket Shield, taking 33 wickets at an average of 17.18 for Wellington. He also impressed with Worcestershire this season, claiming 27 wickets at 21.14 in seven County Championship games, alongside scoring three half-centuries. In the T20 Blast, he took eight wickets in nine matches before a hamstring injury forced him to return home.
Coach’s Comments on New Contracts
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead noted that Smith has been a standout in domestic cricket, particularly in red-ball formats, and possesses the skills needed for international success. Clarkson has been part of the white-ball squads over the past year, showcasing his abilities in series against Bangladesh, Australia, and Pakistan. Stead praised Clarkson as a powerful player with bat and ball, who adds depth and value to the squad.
Conway and Allen vacated their spots on the central contracts list to pursue T20 league opportunities. Conway will play for Joburg Super Kings in the SA20, while Allen signed a two-year deal with Perth Scorchers in the BBL. Despite these changes, both players remain available for selection.
Upcoming Matches for New Zealand
New Zealand will face Afghanistan in a one-off Test next week in Greater Noida, followed by tours to Sri Lanka and India for two and three Tests, respectively.
