Despite being out of contention for the IPL playoffs, Mumbai Indians (MI) are standing firm on their decision not to rest star pacer Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the T20 World Cup, affirmed batting coach Kieron Pollard.
Following their convincing victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pollard addressed queries about the possibility of resting Bumrah in MI’s remaining matches to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
“I certainly haven’t had any discussions about that,” Pollard stated in response, emphasizing the team’s focus on completing the IPL season without preoccupying themselves with future tournaments. “I don’t think that’s my role and function at this point in time.”
Pollard underscored the importance of maintaining focus on current performances and not letting thoughts of forthcoming events overshadow their IPL campaign. “Sometimes when we think too far ahead of different things, thinking about World Cups. All these things could affect performances even from before the team was selected,” he added.
MI’s last IPL fixture is against Lucknow Super Giants on May 17. While T20 World Cup is scheduled to commence on June 1. Pollard hinted that Bumrah’s rest might be considered once he transitions to the Indian team setup for the tournament.
Addressing Suryakumar Yadav’s batting style, Pollard acknowledged the challenge of coaching. An aggressive batter like him while also instilling situational awareness and discipline. He emphasized the balance between curbing attacking instincts and not stifling natural flair. Recognizing the evolving nature of cricket where high-scoring matches prevail.
