Mohammed Shami, known for his bowling prowess, showcased his batting skills in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Madhya Pradesh. In a match where Bengal’s middle-order faltered against a strong MP bowling attack, Shami stepped up with a fiery cameo to guide his team to a respectable total of 269/7.

Bengal opener Sudip Gharami played a valiant knock of 99, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled, leaving Bengal in a precarious position. Just when things seemed bleak, Shami turned the tide with a blistering 42 runs off 34 balls, at a strike rate of 123. His attacking display ensured Bengal reached a competitive score.

Shami, who hasn’t played for India since the 2023 World Cup final, is eyeing a return to the national side, particularly with the Champions Trophy on the horizon. After missing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to a knee injury, he has been working hard on his fitness, hoping to secure a spot in India’s ODI squad. With Jasprit Bumrah also expected to be a key seamer, Shami’s performance in domestic cricket is sending a clear message to the selectors.

Earlier in 2024, Shami was ruled out of the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series due to his knee issue, which required surgery and a lengthy recovery. Despite rumors of a potential Test comeback, Shami’s knee injury kept him out, but his recent form suggests he is ready to make a strong return, particularly in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
