Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury and is unlikely to play again this season, putting his IPL stint with Lucknow Super Giants in doubt.

Marsh had a tough season, losing his Test place to Beau Webster after scoring just 73 runs in seven innings during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His fitness was a major concern throughout the series. After playing one BBL match on January 7, he opted to rest for the remainder of the season to recover for the Champions Trophy. However, his back issues persisted, leading selectors to rule him out. Cricket Australia described the issue as “lower back pain and dysfunction.”
“His lower back pain flared in recent weeks, leading to a longer rehabilitation period,” CA’s statement said. Marsh will now focus on recovery, and Australia will name his replacement soon.
His absence forces Australia to reconsider their top-order plans. Jake Fraser-McGurk, despite inconsistent form, is a like-for-like option at No.3. Australia may also bring in another allrounder, with Will Sutherland, Webster, or Cooper Connolly in contention. Cameron Green remains unavailable due to his ongoing rehab from back surgery.
Australia also face uncertainty over Pat Cummins, who is nursing an ankle injury. If he misses the Champions Trophy, they will need a new captain, with Steven Smith, Travis Head, or Josh Inglis being potential choices.
Marsh played a key role in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup win, scoring centuries against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since March 2023, he has averaged 44.54 in ODIs with a 109.13 strike rate.
Teams can freely adjust their squads until February 11, with Australia set to play two ODIs in Sri Lanka on February 12 and 14 as preparation.
