Australia coach Andrew McDonald has accused India of attempting to intimidate Sam Konstas during a heated moment on the opening day of the Sydney Test. The incident occurred late in the day when Konstas became involved in a verbal exchange with India’s Jasprit Bumrah. The exchange stemmed from Khawaja’s efforts to ensure it was the final over, leading to the umpire intervening. After Khawaja was dismissed off the last ball, Bumrah aggressively approached Konstas, sparking concerns.

McDonald spoke to Konstas afterward, asking if he was shaken by the incident. He acknowledged that India’s celebration after Khawaja’s wicket was “intimidating,” though he noted that the actions were within the laws of the game. He emphasized the importance of ensuring Konstas felt comfortable and ready to perform in the next session. “We have a duty of care to our player,” McDonald stated. “If they thought it was satisfactory, then that’s the benchmark we are playing towards.”
On the following morning, Konstas made 23 runs before edging a delivery to the slips. Bumrah, who was fielding at mid-on, did not immediately join his teammates after the dismissal and instead walked toward Konstas. India’s Prasidh Krishna explained that the team wanted to show their aggression and not be underestimated. “If you can be as aggressive, that’s fine,” Krishna said.
Konstas’ debut had also been marked by tension, with Virat Kohli shoulder-barging him during his 60-run knock at the MCG. Meanwhile, Ricky Ponting criticized Konstas for getting involved in the altercation, suggesting he should have let Khawaja handle it.
