England have made one change to their lineup for the final Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park, with Matthew Potts replacing Chris Woakes. Potts will earn his 10th Test cap, taking the place of Woakes, who has featured in the first two Tests of the series.
Potts, 26, has impressed since his debut in 2022, taking 31 wickets at an average of 29.22. His early career under captain Ben Stokes included notable performances, such as his 14 wickets against New Zealand. After England dropped Potts for Ollie Robinson in the second Test of the South Africa series, his opportunities dwindled. He played only one Test in 2023 and missed out on the third Test against Sri Lanka this summer.
Despite these limited appearances, Potts remains highly regarded by the England team. Stokes praised Potts for his stamina, skill, and ability to bowl long spells, as well as his work with Jimmy Anderson. Potts is likely to take the new ball in Woakes’ absence, offering versatility with his ability to bowl both long spells and short-ball tactics.
Stokes also acknowledged Woakes’ contribution during the tour, with the 35-year-old taking six wickets at 29.16. Despite past concerns about his away record, Stokes praised Woakes’ performances in Pakistan and New Zealand, highlighting his leadership in the attack.
With England already 2-0 up in the series, Stokes is giving Potts a chance to prove his worth in what could be his final Test of 2024.
