Match officials reported Australia spinner Matthew Kuhnemann for a suspect bowling action after his impressive Test series against Sri Lanka. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the development, stating that the left-arm spinner will undergo mandatory testing to assess the legality of his action.

“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral after the second Test in Galle and will support Matt through the process,” a CA spokesperson said.
Why Was Kuhnemann Reported?
Kuhnemann played a key role in Australia’s series win, taking 16 wickets in just two Tests. However, match officials expressed concerns about his action after the second Test. According to ICC regulations, suspected bowlers must undergo testing within 21 days. If tests confirm his action is illegal, Kuhnemann must modify it and get clearance before bowling internationally again.
Kuhnemann’s Rise in International Cricket
The 28-year-old has shown steady growth since his debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in 2023. His recent success in Sri Lanka saw him finish as the series’ highest wicket-taker, with 16 wickets at an average of 17.18. Over his career, Kuhnemann has featured in five Test matches, four ODIs, and 55 T20 games in the Big Bash League (BBL).
This is the first time Kuhnemann’s action has been questioned in his eight-year professional career.
While awaiting test results, he can continue playing domestic cricket for Tasmania. Cricket Australia has assured full support and will collaborate with the ICC to resolve the matter.
