Mark Wood Reflects on Unusual Bowling Role as England Clinches Epic Test Victory

In a surprising turn of events during the first Test against India at Hyderabad, Ben Stokes revealed to Mark Wood that he would open the bowling for just one over as part of England’s unconventional strategy. The plan involved utilizing seamers as a point of difference, with spinners handling the majority of the workload.

This strategic move proved successful as England’s four spinners claimed 18 wickets in the match, with Tom Hartley delivering a match-winning performance with figures of 7 for 62. Mark Wood, the lone seamer in the attack, adjusted to micro-spells, bowling eight second-innings overs in splits of one, three, three, and one.

Wood, despite going wicketless in the match, embraced his unique role and trusted Stokes’ decisions. He acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s star quick Jasprit Bumrah, who took six wickets, including a remarkable spell of reverse-swing. Despite missing the camaraderie of another seamer, Wood considered the overall strategy a success, given the team’s exceptional performance.

As England heads to Vizag with a 1-0 lead for the second Test, Wood anticipates potential changes in India’s approach. England’s ability to neutralize India’s spinners in their second innings provides them with confidence, but Wood remains cautious, emphasizing the need for a consistent approach in the upcoming matches.

Wood reflected, “We’ve given them something to think about. It’s not a foregone conclusion that we are going to turn up here and they’re going to spin us out.” He urged his team not to get ahead of themselves and emphasized the importance of maintaining the same belief and process in the next game.

While acknowledging the achievement of winning the first Test, Wood emphasized the need for a focused and grounded approach as England looks forward to the challenges that lie ahead in the series.
