Sources indicate that Rahul wishes to concentrate more on his batting, leading to discussions about potential new captains. Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran are considered strong candidates for the role. An LSG source revealed, “The meeting with CEO Sanjiv Goenka was official and covered topics like captaincy and player retention. While Rahul will stay with the team, he is unlikely to continue as captain, as he wants to focus on his batting. Goenka has confidence in Rahul’s value as a player but prefers to explore new leadership options.”

The change in captaincy comes in the wake of Goenka’s visible frustration following LSG’s 10-wicket defeat to SRH in the 2024 IPL. Goenka was seen having a heated discussion with Rahul after the match, reflecting his disappointment.

Despite this, Goenka’s decision to retain Rahul underscores his importance to the team. Rahul is also set to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25, beginning on September 4.
