LPL 2024 to introduce ‘Power Blast’ rule for final overs

The LPL 2024 will introduce a new feature called “Power Blast” for the death overs, specifically the 16th and 17th overs of each innings. During these two overs, only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle, adding to the excitement of the game. This is in addition to the traditional powerplay during the first six overs, where only two fielders can be outside the circle.

According to an LPL statement, this new rule aims to create “a more aggressive and thrilling phase of the game.” Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL’s tournament director, stated that this innovation aims to increase excitement for the growing league. It will challenge teams to strategize effectively during this period.

Outside of these powerplay and power-blast overs, the usual rule of allowing a maximum of five fielders in the outfield will apply.

The LPL 2024 will take place from July 1 to 21, overlapping with the USA’s Major League Cricket, which tends to attract more high-profile international players. While the LPL has struggled to draw foreign talent due to financial constraints, it remains popular among local fans.

This fifth edition of the tournament will feature 20 league matches between five franchises, followed by three playoffs and a final. Each team will play the others twice in the league stage, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs.

Notably, the Dambulla Sixers is a new franchise this season, following a change in ownership. Sri Lanka Cricket terminated the previous franchise after police arrested one of the co-owners, Tamim Rahman, under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act.
