England batter Lauren Winfield-Hill has signed with Queensland for the 2024-25 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season after making a significant impact in her nine matches last season.
Queensland, along with New South Wales, released their female contract lists for the upcoming season on Monday. The finalization of these squads was delayed due to a stand-off between Cricket Australia and the states of New South Wales and Victoria over the introduction of a new women’s domestic T20 competition, which was only announced last week.
Winfield-Hill, 33, impressed during the last WNCL season, scoring 194 runs at an average of 32.33, including a crucial half-century that helped Queensland reach the final. Based in Brisbane during the Australian summer, she is married to Courtney Winfield-Hill, a former Queensland and Brisbane Heat pace bowler and current Heat assistant coach. Her move to Queensland follows her concerns over the ECB’s decision to defer Yorkshire’s entry to Tier 1 of England’s new women’s domestic competition, which she described as “unsettling” for her Northern Diamonds team.
Georgia Adams, another English player who participated in the WNCL last year, remains uncontracted by New South Wales but is expected to play a role next season. Meanwhile, Scotland international Saskia Horley has moved permanently to the UK and is no longer on the NSW contract list.
New South Wales have added four teenagers to their squad: Sienna Eve, Elsa Hunter, Lauren Kua, and 18-year-old Kate Pelle, who made her WBBL debut last year with the Sydney Sixers.
