Kagiso Rabada’s stint in the IPL concluded prematurely as he headed home on Sunday night due to a soft tissue infection in his lower limb. Despite his early exit, Kagiso Rabada’s availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup remains intact.
Having represented the Punjab Kings in 11 matches during the IPL, Rabada managed to secure 11 wickets at an economy rate of 8.85. However, he will miss the Kings’ remaining two fixtures as they are already out of playoff contention.
Upon returning to South Africa, Rabada sought medical advice from a specialist and is currently under close observation by the medical team, ensuring his readiness for the World Cup, as confirmed by a statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA).
Rabada’s presence holds significant importance for South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign, especially considering he is the sole black African player named in the 15-man provisional squad. This aspect has drawn attention due to CSA’s targets for diversity in the national team. Mandating the inclusion of a specific number of players of color.
With Rabada being the only black African player in the squad. His consistent participation in every game becomes crucial to meet the diversity requirements. Although South Africa will miss this target at the upcoming T20 World Cup. They aim to increase representation over the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Notably, Lungi Ngidi, another black African player under consideration for the squad, has been included as a traveling reserve. Alongside Rabada, South Africa’s fast bowling contingent comprises Anrich Nortje, returning from a lengthy hiatus due to a stress fracture. Along with Gerald Coetzee, Ottniel Baartman, and Marco Jansen.
