Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s white-ball captain after their group-stage exit from the Champions Trophy. He announced on Friday that he would lead the team one last time against South Africa in Karachi. England’s campaign ended after losses to Australia and Afghanistan, marking another disappointing ICC event following the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Buttler, who succeeded Eoin Morgan in 2022, led England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, results have declined sharply since. After England’s ninth loss in 10 white-ball games this year, he hinted at resignation, stating he needed to evaluate his role in the team’s struggles. His decision comes amid a poor ODI run, with England losing 18 of their last 25 matches. Buttler’s individual form has also dipped, averaging 26.40 in his last 21 innings.
Despite stepping down, Buttler will continue playing for England. He expressed sadness over the decision but hopes to regain his enjoyment for cricket. Vice-captain Harry Brook is the frontrunner to replace him, though no decision has been made yet. Head coach Brendon McCullum praised Buttler’s leadership and acknowledged the impact of his departure.
England’s managing director Rob Key and ECB chief Richard Gould commended Buttler’s contributions, highlighting his World Cup success and leadership qualities. Gould called him one of the greatest white-ball players, expressing hope for more years of him in an England shirt. While his captaincy ends, Buttler remains a crucial player as England looks for a fresh start.
