Sussex dominated Derbyshire at Hove, pushing for a crucial win to boost their promotion hopes in the Vitality County Championship. Sussex set a record total of 607 for 8, their highest against Derbyshire, before declaring. Derbyshire, struggling in response, ended day two at 178 for 6, trailing by 429 runs.

Indian left-armer Jaydev Unadkat, returning to Sussex for the final stretch of the season, made an immediate impact. He claimed 3 for 19 in a superb five-over spell, including key wickets such as Harry Came and Brooke Guest. By the seventh over, Derbyshire was in dire straits at 19 for 3, with Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Unadkat causing major problems.
Wayne Madsen stood firm, unbeaten on 79, forming a valuable partnership with Anuj Dal, who contributed 45. However, they faced another setback when off-spinner Carson, who scored a career-best 97 earlier, dismissed Dal before stumps.
Earlier, Sussex skipper Ben Simpson led the charge, securing the maximum five batting bonus points by reaching 450 in 110 overs. Simpson’s aggressive innings included 13 fours and a six, reaching 121 and surpassing 10,000 first-class runs.
Carson also made a significant contribution with a knock of 97, hitting three sixes and several boundaries before being bowled by Daryn Dupavillon. Sussex’s total of 607 is their largest at Hove in seven years, reflecting a commanding performance.
