As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy kicks off on November 22, all eyes will be on Jasprit Bumrah, India’s key bowler for the upcoming series against Australia. While Virat Kohli will anchor India’s batting, Bumrah’s performance with the ball is crucial for the visitors’ chances in the five-match Test series. Known for his outstanding record in Australia, Bumrah is eager to add to his legacy and break several records, including one held by former Indian captain, Kapil Dev.

Kapil Dev currently holds the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler on Australian soil, with 51 wickets in 11 Test matches. Bumrah, who has taken 32 wickets in just seven matches in Australia, is only 20 wickets away from surpassing Kapil’s record. If Bumrah plays all five Tests, he has a strong chance of becoming the highest wicket-taker for India in Australia, surpassing not only Kapil but also other notable bowlers like Anil Kumble (49 wickets), R. Ashwin (39 wickets), and Bishan Singh Bedi (35 wickets).

In Rohit Sharma’s absence, Bumrah will also lead the Indian team for the second time in his career. Rohit is missing the series due to the birth of his child, giving Bumrah the opportunity to captain India. Bumrah’s only previous stint as captain came during the one-off Test against England in 2022, a match India lost. However, this time, he has a great opportunity to steer India to a series lead with his performance as both a bowler and leader.
