Jamie Smith Earns Central Contract Alongside Stokes and Buttler for 2024-25 Season

Jamie Smith, a 24-year-old right-handed batter, is among five players to receive a central contract for the first time. Jamie Smith’s impressive season, with 637 runs in nine Tests at an average of 42.46, including a century and four fifties, earned him a two-year contract alongside senior players like Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. England’s Test captain, Stokes, previously on a one-year contract, was upgraded to a two-year deal. White-ball captain Buttler, as well as seasoned batter Joe Root and emerging star Harry Brook, also secured two-year contracts, highlighting their value to England’s setup. Gus Atkinson, after a remarkable home season where he claimed 34 wickets in six Tests, is another addition to the two-year contract roster.

Other first-time central contract recipients include Will Jacks, Shoaib Bashir, Phil Salt, and Olly Stone, who have each showcased strong potential in England’s white-ball squad. Additionally, the ECB awarded development contracts to all-rounder Jacob Bethell and pacer Josh Hull, who recently made international appearances against Australia and Sri Lanka. They join John Turner in this category, forming a group seen as the future of England cricket.

The ECB’s central contract list for 2024-25 demonstrates a balance between rewarding established stars and nurturing young talent, aiming to solidify England’s cricketing depth across formats as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
