Jalal Yunus resigns as BCB director

Jalal Yunus has resigned from his role as a BCB director and chairman of the cricket operations committee. His resignation follows a request from the National Sports Council (NSC), which oversees 41 sports bodies in Bangladesh.

Jalal Yunus resigns as BCB director

Yunus, a former fast bowler who played in the 1980s and has been a key figure in sports administration since the late 1990s, has been with the BCB in significant roles since 2009. He became head of cricket operations in December 2021. He stated, “I have resigned for the greater interest of cricket” and expressed his willingness to step aside to support the sport’s proper management.

In contrast, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam, another NSC-nominated director, refused to resign. Alam, who is also the BCB’s tournament committee chairman, said the NSC must officially decide his status.

The NSC’s decision aligns with new sports adviser Asif Mahmud’s push for reforms across sports federations, including the BCB. Mahmud aims to eliminate political influence from sports, noting that the BCB’s board has been politically prominent, including figures like former sports minister Nazmul Hassan and several high-profile politicians.

The NSC will now appoint a replacement for Yunus. Faruque Ahmed, a former Bangladesh captain and two-time chief selector, is expected to be the new NSC-nominated director.
