Irfan Pathan, reflecting on his own journey, highlighted the traditional pathway to the Indian team, which involved excelling in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy, or representing India at the Under-19 level. However, the IPL has transformed this process, offering a direct route for talented youngsters to grab the attention of selectors with standout performances in the league.
Irfan Pathan emphasized how the IPL has democratized access to the Indian team. Now, players can secure national call-ups based solely on their IPL performances. This shift has significantly altered the dynamics of Indian cricket, allowing young talents to bypass traditional pathways and earn recognition on the grand stage of the IPL.
The talk went further than just talking about how the IPL affects picking players for the team. Irfan Pathan shared a personal story about choosing to help coach and guide young cricket players instead of taking well-paying jobs in other cricket leagues after he stopped playing. Even though he had offers from leagues around the world, Irfan Pathan decided to focus on helping young Indian players get better at cricket. This shows how he wanted to give back to the sport that made him who he is.
