Dinesh Karthik’s remarkable form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has once again ignited discussions about his potential inclusion in the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. With a staggering 226 runs from just six innings, averaging an impressive 75.33 and boasting an exceptional strike rate of 205.45, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper-batsman has climbed the ranks to become one of the top ten run-scorers of the season so far.
His recent stellar knock of 83 runs off a mere 35 balls against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 30 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru has further intensified the clamor among fans for Karthik’s return to the national squad.
Responding to the discussions surrounding Karthik’s potential inclusion, former cricketer Irfan Pathan weighed in on the debate, highlighting the complexity of the situation. Pathan noted that while Karthik previously played in the shadow of the legendary MS Dhoni, the wicketkeeping position is now occupied by the talented Rishabh Pant. Pathan suggested prioritizing players like Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma, who have recently been part of the Indian squad, over Karthik.
Pathan’s comments underline the fierce competition brewing among Indian wicketkeepers vying for a spot in the prestigious T20 World Cup squad. Notably, players like Samson, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ishan Kishan have all been in stellar form in IPL 2024, presenting a significant challenge for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Selection Committee. Selecting only two wicketkeepers from this talented pool for the upcoming tournament in the West Indies and USA, scheduled to commence from June 01, will be a crucial decision.
