South Africa secured their spot in the World Test Championship Final with a dominant win over Pakistan in the first Test. Following that victory, the team made several changes to their playing XI for the second Test, offering opportunities to younger players. One of the most exciting inclusions is Kwena Maphaka, an 18-year-old left-arm pacer set to make his Test debut at Newlands, Cape Town. Maphaka, who has already played ODIs and T20Is for South Africa, replaces Dane Paterson in the squad.
In addition to Maphaka’s debut, Keshav Maharaj and Wiaan Mulder have been brought in for Tony De Zorzi and Corbin Bosch. While Paterson and Bosch both contributed significantly in the first Test, with Paterson claiming a five-wicket haul and Bosch taking five wickets and scoring an unbeaten 81, the South African management has opted for the experienced Maharaj and the fit-again Mulder.
Maphaka’s inclusion highlights South Africa’s strategy to develop him as a long-term prospect across formats. The young pacer has impressed at the U19 level and in his limited international opportunities, and his recent IPL stint with Mumbai Indians has added to his credentials.
Temba Bavuma continues to lead the side, while Ryan Rickelton will open the batting alongside Aiden Markram, with De Zorzi dropped from the XI. Additionally, Mulder will serve as a batting all-rounder. Overall, the South African squad remains balanced and well-equipped, with Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen leading the pace attack, and Maharaj adding spin.
