Venkatesh Iyer is set to return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for IPL 2025, playing a key role in their title defense. The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder, released by KKR during the IPL 2025 retention window, made headlines at the mega auction in Saudi Arabia by fetching a staggering ₹23.75 crore.

After his record-breaking bid, Venkatesh expressed interest in captaining KKR, with Shreyas Iyer released on October 31. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said, “Given the responsibility to be KKR captain, I’d be more than happy to do it.”
The management released Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to their first IPL title since 2014, creating a captaincy void. With the team’s focus on retaining their championship, Venkatesh’s experience and familiarity with the franchise make him a strong contender for the leadership role.
The dynamic all-rounder has been a vital part of the KKR setup since IPL 2021. Over 51 matches, he has scored 1,326 runs at an impressive average of 31.57 and a strike rate of 137.12. His record includes 11 half-centuries and a century, making him one of KKR’s most consistent performers.
KKR’s decision to reacquire Venkatesh for a hefty sum underscores his value to the team. As the franchise aims to defend their title in IPL 2025, his potential elevation to captaincy could mark a new chapter in his career while solidifying KKR’s quest for sustained success.
