Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has been fined INR 24 lakh for his team’s second slow over-rate offence in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The breach occurred during their recent match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
According to Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, a captain is fined INR 24 lakh for a second over-rate offence in a season. While previous IPL rules imposed a one-match suspension for a third such offence, the updated regulations have removed that penalty. Alongside Samson, the rest of the playing XII — including the Impact Player — have also been fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower.
Interestingly, RR’s first over-rate offence this season happened under a different captain. During a match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last month, Riyan Parag led the side as Samson was sidelined from leadership duties due to a finger injury and played only as the Impact Player. In that instance too, a fine of INR 24 lakh was levied on the captain, which Parag had to pay.
This latest over-rate violation came during RR’s third defeat in five matches this season. The team had gained momentum with two consecutive wins before falling short against GT. With this loss, Rajasthan Royals currently sit at seventh in the IPL 2025 points table.
Maintaining the required over-rate remains a challenge for teams, especially with the growing use of strategic breaks and Impact Players. However, repeated offences could lead to heavier fines for players and team management in the long run.
