Five of the ten IPL franchises have appointed new captains for the 2025 season, bringing significant leadership changes. Rajat Patidar will take over as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), while Shreyas Iyer will lead Punjab Kings (PBKS). Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have appointed Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain, while Axar Patel will lead Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rishabh Pant will take charge of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Among the unchanged leadership, Hardik Pandya will continue to lead Mumbai Indians (MI), having returned to the franchise ahead of IPL 2024. Ruturaj Gaikwad remains at the helm for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), while Pat Cummins will once again lead Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Sanju Samson continues as Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) captain, a role he has held since 2021. Shubman Gill will also retain the Gujarat Titans (GT) captaincy after taking over from Hardik Pandya in 2024.
These captaincy changes reflect the franchises’ strategies for IPL 2025, with teams looking to rebuild and strengthen leadership. While some experienced players like Rahane and Iyer return to leadership roles, young talents such as Patidar and Axar get their first opportunity as IPL captains. The season will be crucial for teams undergoing transitions, as the new captains aim to leave their mark.
IPL 2025 is expected to be highly competitive, with both experienced and first-time captains striving for success. Fans will closely watch how these leadership changes impact team performances when the tournament begins.
