The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a fresh rule in IPL 2025, allowing umpires to randomly check the size of bats during matches. While bat size checks were previously done in the dressing room before games, this new rule gives match officials the authority to inspect bats at any time during live play.

This rule has already been put into action, with players like Hardik Pandya, Phil Salt, and Shimron Hetmyer being asked to submit their bats for on-field measurement. These checks are being done using a ‘home-shaped bat gauge’ to ensure that the bats fall within the legal dimensions.

As per the regulations, a bat cannot be wider than 4.25 inches, deeper than 2.64 inches, and its edges must not exceed 1.56 inches. Every batter must pass the gauge test before taking strike in a match. The move is seen as BCCI’s effort to tighten oversight and prevent the use of oversized bats, which can offer an unfair advantage in a format already dominated by high-scoring matches.

Reports suggest that the decision was triggered after certain players were found using bats that exceeded the permissible size, prompting the board to act swiftly. By introducing this rule, the BCCI aims to maintain a level playing field and protect the spirit of the game.

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal backed the move, stating that such measures are necessary to ensure fairness in the competition. With more scrutiny on equipment, this rule could influence both the mindset of batters and the strategies of bowlers in the ongoing season.
