The IPL 2025 season will feature a total of 74 matches, maintaining the same format as the previous three seasons. This is ten matches fewer than the 84 initially proposed when the IPL media rights for 2023-2027 were sold. The IPL’s tender document had indicated a fluctuating number of matches each season: 74 matches for 2023 and 2024, 84 matches for 2025 and 2026, and up to 94 matches for 2027.

ESPNcricinfo reports that a key reason for sticking with 74 matches in 2025 is to manage the workload of Indian international players. As India aims for a third consecutive World Test Championship final, scheduled to begin on June 11 at Lord’s, the BCCI wants to ensure players receive adequate rest in preparation.
Although the IPL 2025 dates remain unconfirmed, organizers expect the tournament to run from mid-March to the end of May. Jay Shah, the outgoing BCCI secretary, emphasized that while 84 matches are part of the media rights contract, the BCCI can decide on the actual number to organize.
The IPL became one of the richest sporting leagues globally in 2022, with media rights sold for approximately INR 48,390.5 crore (USD 6.2 billion). The number of matches in a season influences the special package of high-profile games. For instance, with 74 matches, the special package includes 18 matches. If the number of matches increases, the special package matches will also rise accordingly.
