New India bowling coach Morne Morkel has shared his philosophy on his role, stating that “What isn’t broken shouldn’t be mended.” Morkel, who previously worked with head coach Gautam Gambhir at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), appreciates the self-sustaining nature of the Indian cricket system. His approach focuses on making small enhancements instead of overhauling existing structures.

“I’ve seen how this setup operates from close quarters and my goal is to make it better in small ways,” Morkel told BCCI.TV. He expressed a desire to work within the established system, aiming to support and subtly improve rather than fundamentally change what already works.
Morkel values the leadership of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah. “We’re fortunate to have such quality senior players who will lead the charge,” he said. His role, he noted, will be to provide support and offer advice as needed.
Morkel joined the team for the pre-series camp before the Bangladesh series and is focusing on building trust and relationships with the players. “It’s important to connect with the team and form friendships,” he added.
India’s Series Goals
India’s immediate focus is the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, aims for a series whitewash to bolster their position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. Consequently, a clean sweep would significantly strengthen their standing in the WTC, enhancing their chances of reaching the final.
