India solidified their dominance in the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) by defeating England 4-1 in a five-match series held in Dharamsala. This victory propelled India to the top of both the WTC points table and the ICC’s Test rankings. Despite an initial setback, losing the first Test against England in Hyderabad, India showcased resilience, climbing back to the summit through consistent performances throughout the series.
The WTC’s points system rewards teams with 12 points for a Test win, and India’s impressive record saw them amass 74 points out of 108 available, resulting in a percentage of 68.51%. England, despite winning three Tests, lag behind due to deductions for slow over rates, highlighting the importance of maintaining pace in the game. As the WTC cycle progresses, New Zealand and Australia remain strong contenders for the final spot, with the ongoing Christchurch Test determining their standings.
Looking ahead, with only the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Test series left before the IPL season, India’s reign at the top seems secure for the foreseeable future. The top two teams at the culmination of the WTC cycle will contend for the championship at Lord’s in June 2025, with India aiming to redeem their previous final losses.
