The ICC announced penalties for Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head on Monday, December 9, following their verbal spat during the second Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval. The altercation drew widespread attention on social media.

According to the ICC’s statement, Siraj was fined 20% of his match fee and received a demerit point. Head, while spared a monetary fine, also incurred a demerit point. Both players avoided further sanctions as this was their first offense in the past 24 months, making them eligible for the third Test starting December 14 in Brisbane.
Why Were Siraj and Head Penalized?
The ICC charged Siraj under Article 2.5 of its Code of Conduct for “using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.” Head, on the other hand, breached Article 2.13, which relates to “abusing a player, support personnel, umpire, or match referee during an international match.”
The Incident
The clash occurred on day two of the second Test. Siraj dismissed Travis Head, who had scored a dominant 140 in Australia’s first innings. Following the wicket, Siraj gave Head an aggressive send-off, which provoked a heated response from the batter. Head used foul language as he walked back to the pavilion, further escalating tensions.
Both players will play in the crucial Brisbane Test despite receiving penalties. The incident highlights the intensity of the series and the fine line players must navigate in expressing emotions on the field.
