The Decision Review System (DRS), a cornerstone of modern cricket, is facing renewed scrutiny regarding its accuracy in judging bounce. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has become the latest voice against the system, echoing the concerns of several cricketers, including legendary captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The debate reignited during a recent IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Virat Kohli’s dismissal on a delivery from Harshit Rana, adjudged a full toss by the umpire, sparked controversy. While some argued it was a no ball based on replays, others defended it as a fair delivery based on the new Hawk-Eye technology.
Harbhajan, on the podcast series “180 Not Out” hosted by Raman Raheja, expressed his reservations about the DRS’s ability to accurately determine if the ball would have hit the stumps. While acknowledging the value of technology in cricket, he questioned the system’s effectiveness in judging bounce, highlighting the inconsistency between DRS rulings and traditional umpiring decisions in local cricket, where any wicket contact is considered an out. He further argued that DRS verdicts should solely rely on whether the ball hits the stumps, regardless of the initial call.
Former pacer S Sreesanth joined the discussion, believing such technology could have secured him more wickets during his playing days. However, he cautioned against over-reliance on it, emphasizing the importance of adapting to change while maintaining the human element in the game.
“180 Not Out” delves into various cricket topics, featuring discussions with cricketing legends on the sport’s impact, controversies, commercialization, coaching, fitness, and future prospects. Set against the backdrop of the Legends League Cricket (LLC), also hosted by Raman Raheja, the podcast promises to be a valuable platform for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
