Afghanistan secured a thrilling three-run victory over Sri Lanka in the third T20I in Dambulla, ending the series on a positive note despite Sri Lanka winning the series 2-1.

The match saw Afghanistan endure pressure from both ends of the innings, first from Pathum Nissanka and later from Kamindu Mendis, who staged valiant efforts for Sri Lanka. However, Afghanistan managed to hold their nerve in the final moments to clinch the win.
The pivotal moments came down to the final deliveries of each innings. Afghanistan, opting to bat first, capitalized on debutant Mohammed Ishaq’s performance, scoring 10 runs off the last two balls to reach a formidable total of 209 for 5. In response, Sri Lanka required 10 runs off the final two balls, but Kamindu Mendis couldn’t only muster six runs off the last delivery, falling short of the target.
Notable performances included Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s explosive 70 off 43 balls and Hazratullah Zazai’s aggressive 45 off 22 balls, setting the stage with an 88-run opening stand. Despite Nissanka’s brisk 60 off 30 balls and Kamindu’s resilient 65 off 39 balls, Sri Lanka couldn’t quite chase down the target.
Both teams faced challenges with their bowling attacks, none able to maintain an economy rate below eight, as batsmen from both sides dominated proceedings.
Partnerships played a crucial role for Afghanistan, with successive stands ensuring a steady flow of runs and preventing Sri Lanka from gaining control. Meanwhile, Nissanka’s aggressive batting at the top of the order showcased his prowess as a power hitter for Sri Lanka, although a hamstring injury forced him to retire hurt.
Ultimately, Afghanistan’s ability to maintain composure under pressure and capitalize on key moments secured them a hard-fought victory, concluding the series with a positive note amidst a spirited performance from Sri Lanka.
