Emerging reports suggest that Gautam Gambhir, India’s new head coach, has recommended former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel for the role of India’s bowling coach. According to Cricbuzz, Morkel is now a contender alongside former Indian seamers Zaheer Khan, L Balaji, and R Vinay Kumar for this crucial position.

Gambhir, who recently took over from Rahul Dravid as head coach, has reportedly urged the BCCI to appoint Morkel, highlighting their successful partnership during their tenure with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. Although Gambhir has returned to Kolkata Knight Riders, Morkel has continued as the Super Giants’ bowling coach during IPL 2024, showcasing their effective collaboration.
Morne Morkel boasts an illustrious career, having played 247 international matches for South Africa and claiming 544 wickets across formats. Since retiring from international cricket in 2018, Morkel has gained coaching experience, notably serving as Pakistan’s bowling coach during the ODI World Cup last year. His extensive knowledge and coaching expertise make him a valuable candidate to enhance India’s bowling attack.
Gambhir’s endorsement of Morkel underscores their shared understanding and potential to contribute significantly to Indian cricket’s development.
