Gautam Gambhir faced criticism from fans on social media after Sunil Narine’s initial failure against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) began their campaign at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Narine, promoted as an opener, managed just 2 runs off 4 balls in that game. However, Gambhir persisted with the strategy, and in the subsequent match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Narine’s match-winning knock vindicated the decision.

The idea to promote Narine as an opener originated in 2017 under Gambhir’s captaincy, inspired by Narine’s success in similar roles in other T20 leagues. Although initially successful, the strategy eventually lost its effectiveness as Narine’s weaknesses were exposed. However, with Gambhir back in the mentor’s role for KKR, Narine was once again entrusted with the opening spot. After a disappointing start against SRH, Narine bounced back with a blazing 22-ball 47 against RCB, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Narine’s explosive innings, characterized by five sixes and two boundaries, left Gambhir visibly ecstatic in the dugout, with the former skipper applauding Narine’s efforts. Reflecting on the decision to persist with Narine as opener, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer revealed that there were doubts within the management but ultimately, Narine’s ability to clear the infield justified his role. Iyer emphasized the communication within the team, noting the pitch conditions and the strategy adopted during the match.
