Aaron Finch, the former Melbourne Renegades captain, has called for the team to consider abandoning Marvel Stadium unless the venue’s conditions improve. This follows criticism of the outfield during the Renegades’ BBL season opener against Perth Scorchers, where the pitch looked patchy and proved difficult to bat on, especially after the roof closed for two days due to wet weather. Finch expressed his disappointment with the venue, questioning whether Marvel Stadium was serious about hosting cricket. He suggested the Renegades move their games to Geelong, citing the venue’s poor conditions for cricket year after year.

BBL boss Alistair Dobson also shared his disappointment with the state of the ground, acknowledging that it was “presented poorly.” However, he pointed out that multi-purpose venues like Marvel and Sydney’s Engie Stadium face challenges in maintaining optimal surfaces due to the wide variety of events held there, including concerts and graduations. While Dobson admitted the need for improvement, he confirmed that Cricket Australia is open to reconsidering future scheduling, potentially avoiding Marvel until later in the summer to ensure better conditions.
Despite Finch’s call for a full-time move to Geelong, it seems unlikely, as Cricket Australia believes Melbourne needs two teams for a strong presence in the city. Dobson also rejected suggestions of merging the Renegades with the Melbourne Stars, citing the distinct identities of the two teams. The BBL’s growing domestic audience and TV ratings highlight the importance of maintaining a positive image for the tournament, especially on the global stage.
