Former England skipper Eoin Morgan has endorsed Brendon McCullum as the new white-ball coach for the England cricket team following Matthew Mott’s resignation. Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will temporarily take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the home summer as England gears up for a multi-format white-ball series against Australia.
Matthew Mott, who led England to their 2022 T20 World Cup victory, has stepped down. In the interim, Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as head coach. Eoin Morgan, recognizing McCullum’s success and experience in the Test format, believes he is a suitable candidate to lead the white-ball team.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Thursday, Eoin Morgan praised McCullum, calling him one of the “best coaches in the world.” He compared McCullum to other top coaches like Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, and Stephen Fleming, highlighting McCullum’s potential for the role.
Trescothick will also manage the team as they prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in Pakistan. Morgan emphasized McCullum’s ability to inspire and achieve success, referencing his impressive work with the Test team. However, Eoin Morgan acknowledged the challenge of fitting McCullum’s coaching style into the year-round demands of the white-ball team.
England’s recent accomplishments include a 3-0 victory over West Indies in a home Test series. Before their white-ball commitments, England will face Sri Lanka in a three-Test series, with the first match scheduled to begin at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday, August 21.
