Former South African international JP Duminy has stepped down as the white-ball batting coach of the national team, citing personal reasons. Duminy, who was appointed in March 2023 as part of Rob Walter’s coaching staff, joined during Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) transition from the Mark Boucher era.
Duminy had previously served as head coach for the SA20 franchise Paarl Royals and the domestic side Boland. However, it remains unclear if he will continue coaching in other capacities for now. He was instrumental in South Africa’s journey to the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-finals but had to leave the team earlier this year ahead of the T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean, also due to personal commitments.
With Duminy’s departure, CSA will now look for a replacement. However, appointing a full-time candidate ahead of the upcoming Pakistan series, starting next week, seems unlikely. The series begins with three T20Is, followed by three ODIs that will serve as preparation for the Champions Trophy. White-ball players currently involved in the Test series against Sri Lanka will not be available for the T20Is.
If CSA doesn’t find a permanent coach in time, they may assign batting lead Imraan Khan. He joined the Test squad in Bangladesh earlier this year, filling in for red-ball batting coach Ashwell Prince during his absence. Prince has since resumed his Test coaching duties, leaving Khan as a potential interim option for the white-ball team.
Duminy took on the role of head coach for the Sharjah Warriorz in the ILT20 in September 2024, hinting at his continued coaching journey beyond the South African setup.
