In a strategic move to address the absence of injured allrounder Mitchell Marsh, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have signed Afghanistan’s Gulbadin Naib as his replacement for the remaining matches of the IPL 2024 season. This marks Naib’s IPL debut, and he was acquired at his reserve price of INR 50 lakh.

Marsh’s stint with DC was cut short due to a hamstring injury after featuring in just four matches. He returned to Perth from India on April 12 to consult with Cricket Australia’s medical staff. Despite initial hopes for his return, DC head coach Ricky Ponting confirmed Marsh’s absence from the rest of the season.
Marsh’s injury may affect his T20 World Cup participation, slated to start on June 1 in the USA and the West Indies. He was anticipated to captain the Australian team. However, Ponting expressed confidence in Marsh’s recovery and rehabilitation process.
In his limited appearances for DC, Marsh contributed with the bat, scoring a total of 61 runs across three innings, with a high score of 23. He also bowled eight overs, claiming one wicket, but with a relatively high economy rate of 12.87. DC encountered Marsh’s mid-season absence before, as seen in the previous season, indicating a recurring challenge for the team.
The Delhi Capitals are positioned sixth on the IPL 2024 points table with four wins in nine matches. They face pivotal encounters against Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Lucknow Super Giants. These upcoming fixtures will be crucial for their playoff aspirations. With Naib coming on board, DC aims to bolster their all-round options and strengthen their position in the tournament.
