Delano Potgieter was surprised to be part of MI Cape Town’s (MICT) bowling attack on the opening day of the SA20 2025 season. However, his seam bowling played a pivotal role in helping MICT secure a dominant 97-run victory over two-time defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Gqeberha.

His “phenomenal captain” Rashid Khan handed the ball to Potgieter, who repaid the trust with an outstanding performance, taking 5 wickets for just 10 runs in 3 overs. His brilliant spell helped MICT register their first-ever win against Sunrisers in five encounters.
Potgieter reflected on the match, admitting that with a star-studded bowling lineup including Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch, and Rashid Khan, there was little expectation for him to bowl. However, the captain’s decision to hand him the ball turned out to be a game-changer.
Earlier in the game, Potgieter had contributed with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 25 off 12 balls, which lifted MICT to a total of 174/7.
The victory was particularly sweet for Potgieter, who had only previously played 12 matches for MICT in the SA20 over three seasons. Prior to this game, he had 34 wickets from 64 T20 matches, making this his first significant bowling performance for the team.
“I couldn’t ask for a better day for it,” Potgieter said. “It happened so quickly, and fortunately, it worked out perfectly.” His allround performance proved crucial in securing MICT’s first win of the season.
