Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Tuesday that former captain Daren Sammy will take over as the head coach of the West Indies men’s team across all formats, effective April 1, 2025.

Daren Sammy Appointed West Indies Head Coach for All Formats

Sammy, who famously led West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016, has already made a significant impact since becoming the white-ball coach in 2023. Under his leadership, the limited-overs team has shown notable improvement, winning 15 of 28 ODIs and 20 of 35 T20Is, including four bilateral series victories against top sides like India, England, and South Africa.

Taking charge of all formats, Sammy will replace Andre Coley as the head coach of the Test team. The decision reflects CWI’s confidence in Sammy’s ability to rebuild a competitive team across formats. CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe announced the decision during the Quarterly Press Conference in St. Vincent.

Despite success in white-ball cricket, West Indies have struggled in Tests. During the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, the team endured series defeats to India, England, and South Africa, while matches against Australia and Bangladesh ended in draws. Their inconsistent performances resulted in a bottom-place finish in the rankings.

Sammy’s appointment signals hope for a revival, particularly in Test cricket. The 40-year-old brings valuable experience, leadership, and an understanding of Caribbean cricket. His tenure is expected to instill stability, improve consistency, and inspire the squad to compete strongly on the global stage.

With Sammy at the helm, West Indies cricket fans are optimistic about the team regaining its lost glory, both in Tests and limited-overs formats.
