CSK’s likely playing XI for IPL 2026 after the auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spent INR 41 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction, making a mix of bold and calculated moves to strengthen their squad for the new season. The five-time champions focused on investing in promising young Indian players while also adding a few smart overseas signings who could prove valuable in Indian conditions. With a full 25-player squad now in place, CSK’s attention will shift towards finding the right balance and settling on their best playing XI.

At the top of the order, CSK look well covered. Ayush Mhatre and Sanju Samson are expected to open the batting. Mhatre impressed during IPL 2025 with his fearless approach and a strike rate above 180, making him an exciting option in the powerplay. Samson, who arrived via a trade from Rajasthan Royals, brings experience and consistency, having scored over 4,000 runs in the IPL. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to bat at No. 3. After missing IPL 2025 due to injury, Gaikwad has returned to form in domestic cricket and recently scored a century against Australia in ODIs, giving CSK confidence ahead of the season.

In the middle order, Dewald Brevis is expected to play the role of aggressor. The South African youngster made a strong impact last season, especially against spin bowling. MS Dhoni will continue as the wicketkeeper-batter, providing calmness, leadership and finishing ability in crucial moments.

CSK’s all-round department may feature Prashant Veer and Matthew Short. Veer, bought for INR 14.20 crore, is a left-arm spinner who can also contribute valuable runs down the order, helping fill the gap left by Ravindra Jadeja. Short offers flexibility, with the ability to bat anywhere in the lineup and chip in with the ball when needed.

The bowling attack looks well balanced. Rahul Chahar adds experience to the spin unit alongside Noor Ahmad, who was CSK’s top wicket-taker in IPL 2025. In pace, Nathan Ellis brings smart variations, while Khaleel Ahmed remains a wicket-taking option with the new ball.

CSK’s predicted playing XI for IPL 2026 includes Ayush Mhatre, Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad (captain), Matthew Short, Dewald Brevis, Prashant Veer, MS Dhoni (wicketkeeper), Rahul Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed, Nathan Ellis and Noor Ahmad, with Shivam Dube as the Impact Player.
