Speculation about MS Dhoni’s IPL 2025 future continues to swirl, with recent reports suggesting he might play as an uncapped player in upcoming seasons. Addressing these rumors, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently clarified the situation.

As IPL 2025 approaches, potential rule changes could significantly impact the league. One of the anticipated changes is the reintroduction of the uncapped player rule. This rule, which the BCCI may implement, would allow any international player who retired five years ago to participate in the IPL as an uncapped player. The rule was used in the inaugural IPL season but hasn’t been applied since.
When asked about MS Dhoni potentially playing as an uncapped player, Kasi Viswanathan stated that CSK has no information or requests related to this rule. “I have no idea about it—we haven’t requested it. BCCI mentioned the possibility of keeping the uncapped player rule, but they haven’t announced anything yet,” he told TOI.
Under current IPL regulations, an uncapped player can cost up to INR 4 crore. If MS Dhoni plays under this rule, CSK could benefit financially. It would allow them to retain core players and strengthen other team areas.
MS Dhoni has remained silent regarding his future. He will make a decision once next season’s rules are finalized.
