The Sydney Sixers, a franchise in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), have signed New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr to a three-year deal, a move that comes as a significant blow to their rivals, Brisbane Heat.

The Sydney Sixers secured Kerr, a pivotal player for the Heat since 2019, through the league’s new multi-year contracting system, which allows teams to sign one player outside of the overseas draft. Kerr, ranked as the world’s No. 2 allrounder, boasts impressive credentials with 62 wickets in 58 matches at an economy rate of 6.42.

Despite the Heat’s efforts to retain her under the pre-draft multi-year contract system, Kerr chose to move to Sydney because she wanted to be closer to her family and have more downtime amid the demanding schedule of women’s cricket.

“It was an extremely hard decision to leave Brisbane as the players and staff there have been nothing but good to me,” Kerr said. “But being based in Sydney will allow me to spend more time with my close family and continue improving as a cricketer and a person.”

The Heat, acknowledging Kerr’s personal reasons for the move, expressed disappointment over losing her but wished her well in her new chapter with the Sydney Sixers .
