In a significant development in Bangladesh cricket, reports indicate that Najmul Shanto has offered his resignation as captain to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and does not wish to continue leading the team after the ongoing South Africa series. Currently engaged in a two-match Test series against South Africa, Shanto reportedly plans to step down following the second Test. According to a Cricbuzz report, Shanto personally informed a senior BCB official of his decision, which the board member confirmed.

Shanto himself spoke with Cricbuzz, revealing he had formally requested to step down as captain and is now awaiting BCB’s response. “Let’s see what happens regarding leading Bangladesh,” Shanto said, adding that he is “still waiting to hear it from the president [of BCB].” This move suggests Shanto may not lead the team in the upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025 in Pakistan if his resignation is accepted.
Initially, Shanto considered stepping down from the T20I captaincy after Bangladesh’s disappointing performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, after a disheartening series loss to India in the recently concluded Test series, Shanto decided to resign from captaincy across all formats. This shift indicates a reconsideration from his earlier stance, reflecting his apparent dissatisfaction with recent results.
Shanto’s tenure as captain had moments of success, most notably Bangladesh’s 2-0 series victory over Pakistan, led by Shan Masood. However, Bangladesh subsequently suffered a 0-2 defeat against India in India, adding to Shanto’s motivation to relinquish the role. Now awaiting the BCB’s decision, Shanto’s future with the captaincy—and potentially his role in Bangladesh’s leadership structure—remains uncertain as the South Africa series draws to a close.
