India’s newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed his condolences following the death of Anshuman Gaekwad, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Gaekwad, a notable figure in Indian cricket as a player, coach, and selector, succumbed to blood cancer on Saturday night.

Gambhir took to his X account to honor Gaekwad, writing, “Saddened by the news of the demise of Anshuman Gaekwad ji. May God give strength to his family and loved ones.” Gaekwad’s contributions to Indian cricket were significant. He played 40 Tests and 15 One Day Internationals for India and coached the Indian team that finished as runners-up in the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy.
Gaekwad’s memorable moments include the 1998 Sharjah tournament and Anil Kumble’s ten-wicket haul against Pakistan in 1999 at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Beyond his playing career, he served as a national selector, led the Baroda Cricket Association, and was a BCCI Apex Council member and ICA representative before his illness.
He had been receiving treatment for blood cancer at King’s College Hospital in London before returning to India last month. In response to his situation, Jay Shah had ordered the BCCI to release a special fund of 1 crore for Gaekwad’s treatment. Members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team also contributed to his support. Following Gaekwad’s passing, the BCCI secretary shared a tribute on Twitter, reflecting the organization’s deep respect and remembrance for the esteemed cricketer.
