Amelia Kerr made an instant impact on her Sydney Sixers debut, guiding her team to a thrilling six-run victory over Melbourne Stars in the WBBL. Rain delayed the match at Junction Oval, forcing the decision to be made using the DLS method.
The Sixers’ chase got off to a rocky start when Sarah Bryce was dismissed early, caught behind for just 1. Kerr, back from a right quad injury she suffered in October, came to the crease and played a pivotal role. She scored an unbeaten 46 from 41 balls, including five boundaries. Partnering with Ellyse Perry, who also finished not out on 48 off 44 balls, the duo added an impressive 94 runs to put the Sixers in control. Perry’s knock featured six boundaries.
Kerr’s contribution didn’t stop with the bat. She also shone with the ball, taking two wickets, including the crucial dismissal of Stars’ top-scorer Annabel Sutherland, who made 42 from 36 balls. Kerr also dismissed Tess Flintoff in the final over, finishing with figures of 2 for 36 from four overs. Sophie Ecclestone was the standout bowler for the Sixers, claiming 3 for 19 from four overs.
The Stars, after a promising start, struggled to build partnerships. Sutherland’s knock, with two fours and two sixes, was the highlight, but the Sixers’ bowlers kept them in check, dismissing them for 122/7. The win improves Sydney’s record to 3-2 in the competition, while Melbourne faces a derby loss as both teams head into their Saturday showdown.
