Zimbabwe have suffered a setback ahead of their ODI series against Sri Lanka, with designated captain ruled out due to a calf injury. The 40-year-old batter sustained the injury on Thursday, just a day before the opening match in Harare. An MRI scan later confirmed a Grade II strain in his left calf and a chronic Grade I strain in his right calf. In his absence, Sean Williams will take over the captaincy.
Ervine is one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced players and a vital part of their batting lineup. Over the years, injuries have forced him to miss patches of cricket, though his latest absence before this series was for personal reasons, as he sat out a Test against Ireland in February 2025 to be with his wife for the birth of their child. Both Ervine and Williams had returned for the home Test series against Bangladesh earlier this year, but Zimbabwe will now have to make do without their senior opener once again.
Ervine has been a steady presence in Zimbabwe’s ODI side since making his debut in 2010. He has played 128 matches, scoring 3,600 runs at an average of 33.02, with four centuries and 23 fifties. His career-best innings came in 2015 when he struck an unbeaten 130 against New Zealand in Harare.
His absence, however, coincides with the much-anticipated return of Brendan Taylor, who is back in international cricket after serving a three-year ban for corruption-related offenses. Taylor, one of Zimbabwe’s finest batters of the past decade, has been especially strong in the ODI format, where he has scored 11 centuries in 203 innings. His comeback provides a timely boost as Zimbabwe face Sri Lanka.
